Lehigh:

Protecting the integrity and future of higher education in the U.S.

The Challenge

As colleges and universities across the country navigated heightened campus tensions following the War in Gaza, Lehigh University sought to strengthen its ability to manage complex, fast-moving issues while maintaining its commitment to institutional neutrality. The university needed a more proactive civic engagement strategy, a streamlined issues management process, and experienced communications support to help leadership respond quickly and thoughtfully to emerging situations on campus.

The Solution

Peppercomm partnered with Lehigh’s communications and public affairs team to build a more comprehensive issues management framework. Through interviews with stakeholders across the university, we identified a broader range of reputational risks beyond campus protests, including international student application fraud, student conduct, controversial campus speakers, and reports of racism, antisemitism, and hate speech. Those challenges became even more complex following the 2024 presidential election.

Working alongside university leadership, Peppercomm developed a crisis response rubric that enabled decision-makers to rapidly assess reputational threats, engage the appropriate internal stakeholders, and respond with greater speed and confidence. We also implemented a daily issues monitoring program that tracked developments across higher education nationwide and evaluated their potential impact on Lehigh, providing leadership with timely insights and actionable guidance.

The Result

The 2024-2025 academic year brought many unexpected events and the Peppercomm team worked as an extension of Lehigh’s internal team to assess and respond:

  • International students falsified their applications, after which their admissions were revoked and they were arrested – in the face of strong student and faculty opposition.
  • Faculty and student-led groups inviting controversial speakers to campus including fired Muhlenberg professor Dr. Maura Finklestein.
  • Response to the “Dear Colleague” letter sent in February 2025 from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights.
